Dr Jay Stewart MBE and Russell J. Thomas
Discussion on gender diversity and gender bias is never far from the headlines, but as practitioners, are we up to date with current knowledge? How might these factors impact on ourselves and our clients within a therapeutic setting? This conference aims to give practitioners in the caring and pastoral professions a clearer understanding of gender diversity and the opportunity to identify and mitigate bias within those settings. Everyone is welcome. This year the theme is 'De-Mystifying Trauma and we have two eminent speakers for the day. Trauma is - in varying degrees - the common experience of Humankind. In 2019 the annual TAP Conference will examine this key issue, at the heart of much of what we, as therapists and health professionals, do. Many of the people we see have experienced significant trauma. With different types of trauma affecting each individual in different ways, how many of us can feel totally confident about offering the appropriate help? Are we worried about making it worse by our lack of knowledge? Can we make a difference or should we leave it to medication and 'experts', offering only ‘support’? Are there tools and techniques we can safely use? John Henden has worked with trauma for twenty-five years all over the world. He has worked with people who have suffered, among other things, childhood abuse, sudden death, assault, rape and combat stress. In his presentation he will suggest that there are both evidence-based and ethical approaches that we can effectively use. John is a respected trainer and psychotherapist with a practical approach to treating trauma. He has developed tools and techniques which can be safely used by therapists with the aim to take people from being Victims to being Survivors to being Thrivers. John is the author of What it Takes to Thrive and Beating Combat Stress. Dr Robert Sharpe wrote his PhD thesis on “Performance in Stressful Environments” and reported the earliest UK research into “mental rehearsal”. Subsequently, as a CBT founder, his book “Thrive on Stress” became a popular and academic resource and he established the UK’s first de-exhaustion clinic in London, treating over five hundred “burn-out” trauma victims and returning them to full work/home capacity within four weeks. As a forensic trauma specialist, he has assessed over three hundred near-death or seriously injured individuals. He has worked around the world with large corporations, made numerous media appearances and remains in touch with current thinking. Robert’s strength is in psycho-unbabbling and demystifying distress by translating complex neuropsychology into everyday concepts that are readily and practically useable by clients.
