TAP is well known for the quality of the speakers who present to the ever growing audience of people interested in psychotherapy, counselling and emotional and physical health and well-being. From Counselling in the 21st century to past-life therapy; from homeopathy to neuroscience; working with children and adults, the LGBT communities and those bereaved - the range of subjects is wide and speakers expert. Our talks are attended by a wide variety of individuals including, social workers, teachers, counsellors, psychotherapists, nurses, clergy, doctors and people with a purely personal interest.
TAP believes that we have much to gain from sharing individual insights developed in a variety of settings. TAP offers an opening for people in the Taunton area to talk and hear about relevant material, theoretical and clinical. It also acts as a channel through which we can meet people from further afield whose ideas and work are of particular interest.
All talks are on Fridays at 7:45pm. Certificates for CPD are available.
Members of TAP can attend every talk free of charge, but non-members are very welcome. The charge at the door is £8 per person, £5 for the usual concessions (inc. students)
Reports on our talks and any handouts available will be uploaded to the BLOG page. Talks from previous years can be found on our Archives page.
Our next TAP Talk The next TAP Talk takes place on November 17th 2017:
Paul Sunderland speaks on the subject : Boarding School Syndrome
Boarding School Syndrome and Recovery – When Privilege is Trauma for the Early Boarder.
A presentation by Paul Sunderland
For the young child the moment of leaving home for boarding school is the beginning of an episode of adaption. The knowledge that large sums of money have been spent on their education, the message that they are fortunate and the assurance that these will be the best years of their lives, set up feelings of shame and anxiety as they experience guilt if they are not grateful and inadequacy if they are not happy. Theirs is a new world suddenly deprived of the familiar comforts of parents, siblings, pets and privacy. For many it is a place of disassociation, self-soothing and powerlessness.
Separation creates a necessity to manage complex feelings alone, acting them out elsewhere and often seeking other dependencies to substitute for the early and abrupt loss of dependency on primary caregivers. Furthermore, inhibition of feelings, wants and needs, which are a prerequisite for intimate relationships, has an enduring impact on brain development and functioning.
Boarding school survivors are over represented in treatment and recovery programs. This presentation seeks to stimulate thought about this group’s particular difficulties and how best to treat their ongoing distress.
Paul Sunderland is an addictions psychotherapist, consultant and trainer with over 30 years of experience in the treatment of addictions. He is Clinical Director of Outcome Consulting and has previously held the posts of Head of Treatment at Clouds House in Wiltshire and Clinical Director at Crossroads Centre, Antigua. He has consulted in the set up of treatment centres around the world, is an expert in the treatment of process addictions and has a special interest in developmental trauma. Paul has spoken at TEDx and has been a regular presenter at UKESAD and ICAAD.
